Hardcover books vs. ebooks

Posted in ebooks

Are ebooks really better than conventional books?

The more popular ebooks get due to the spread of new technologies, the more difficult it can get to decide whether to buy and read printed hardcover books or ebooks. There are several advantages and disadvantages of both of these types. Let’s go through them one by one.

The reading experience

Some people will stick to printed books no matter what. They say that holding the book in their hand, turning the pages or even smelling the book is an experience that cannot be enjoyed by reading ebooks. If you are one of these people, then ebooks are probably not the best solutions for you.

The technology enthusiasts

Technology is all around us these days, and it is very difficult to escape from it. Not everyone wants to though. Members of the younger generations are often quite obsessed with new technology, claiming that new is always better and more interesting than old. For these readers ebooks are perfect. They have more features and extras than printed books, making them more appealing for tech fans.

Environmental concerns

Environmental protection is an important issue today. Environmentalists are concerned about global warming, overpopulation, extinction of animals and so on. Paper manufacturing raises issues like deforestation, air pollution and water pollution. Keeping this in mind, it might be a better choice to buy ebooks instead of printed ones. On the other hand, we have to remember that producing electronic devices has environmental consequences too, such as polluting the air and water, and using resources. So does using these gadgets, since they consume electricity.

Convenience

When we talk about convenience, ebooks are definitely smarter choices than printed books. They don’t take up any space, they are easy to carry around, they can all be stored in one single device. So problems like living in a small apartment, not wanting to carry a huge luggage full of books every time we are going somewhere or not remembering where have we put down our books can be solved by reading ebooks.

Price

This is probably the biggest issue for most people concerning the purchase of products. Let’s face it: prices do matter, since most of us have quite limited financial resources. It is not the only decisive factor when we buy something new, but definitely one of the most important ones. The good news is that the prices of ebooks are generally low, almost always lower than their paperback counterparts. The highest cost regarding ebooks is the cost of the electronic device you use for reading them. This can be a PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone or an ebook reader like Kindle. It’s worth mentioning though that most households already have at least one of these gadgets anyway, and this way we don’t need to make any extra investment before buying ebooks.

A problem for non native English speakers

In the biggest online bookstores of the world, the majority of books are available in English, which is not a big deal for native speakers. The rest of us may need to translate a few words though while reading books in English. Ebooks offer an easy and quick way of doing this: we can just click on the unknown word and see the translation immediately.

Audio books vs. ebooks

Posted in Uncategorized

Reading or listening to books?

Audio books are somewhat different from ebooks or printed books; in their case we listen to books instead of reading them. So can they still be considered books? Shouldn’t they be called like audio soundtracks or audio stories instead? Shouldn’t they be mentioned together with music instead of the more traditional forms of books? Maybe they should, but that’s not the point right now. This kind of entertainment has its upsides and downsides, just like ebooks do.

The youngest “readers”

If you are a parent, you probably have a hard time entertaining your kids every once in a while. Once they are big enough to read on their own, they can entertain themselves with a huge variety of stories. Until then, you’ll have to read for them, which is a time consuming activity. With the help of audio books, this problem can easily be solved. Children can listen to them without your assistance, and this will give more spare time to you and more independence to them.

Driving to work or school

Driving a car requires a great deal of attention. You should not do anything else while driving that can distract you, including eating, texting, watching videos or reading. This way you lose the time you spend in your car, since it is impossible to multitask on the road. Audio books can solve this problem by making the impossible becoming possible anyway: you can enjoy a great book and still focus on driving. You will appreciate this opportunity even more if you have kids, since it can be pretty hard sometimes to entertain them in the car from the driving seat.

Breaking the monotony of work

Performing your tasks at work is often a matter of routine, therefore you don’t always need to concentrate very hard on them. Whether you work in an office in front of a computer, on the road driving a truck or delivering newspapers, or in a warehouse packing boxes, you can find the opportunity to listen to an ebook without putting yourself or others in danger. A great way to multitask, isn’t it? Not to mention all the boring housework which are generally impossible to enjoy, since they are extremely monotonous without the possibility of doing anything else while performing them. At least this was the case before audio books, but today they make it possible to have fun during cleaning or cooking as well.

A different kind of stimulus

Many people who spend lots of time with reading, like students or office workers cannot always think of reading books as a source of recreation. When they finally have some free time, they don’t want to spend it with staring at letters again. Audio books provide them with a new kind of stimulus, making it possible to enjoy stories  without the need for reading the books themselves. This fact especially applies to children who are often overloaded with schoolwork, and don’t even want to think about books when they are finally done with their homework.

9 reasons why ebooks are better than books

Posted in ebooks

Why ebooks?

Along with the advancement of technology, ebooks are becoming more and more popular. But are they actually better than regular books? It seems that way. Here are nine reasons why.

  1. Better for the environment

In order to produce all that paper for books, lots of trees have to be cut down. This can result in serious environmental consequences, such as climate imbalance, global warming, wildlife extinction or floods. Not to mention the waste caused by used, old books that become thrown away.

  1. Cheaper

Even though you need to invest in an electronic device (computer, tablet, Kindle or a smartphone) if you want to read ebooks, it will pay off on the long run (especially if you already have at least one of these devices in your household, which you probably do). Ebooks are often significantly cheaper than printed books.

  1. Saves space

Do you have a small apartment and therefore have no place for a home library? No problem! Ebooks don’t take up more space than the device you use for storing them on. Dusting will be easier as well. Another advantage is that you will always know where you left them: in your ebook reader. The only problem here can come up when you don’t know where you left that device.

  1. Easy to carry

You can take dozens (or even hundreds) of books with you for a short trip or even a longer vacation without worrying about carrying too much weight.

  1. Immediate access

Just a few clicks online and you already have your new book. You don’t need to wait days or weeks for the delivery after your order, and worry that the pack will come that exact time when you are not home. It also saves all that time that you would otherwise spend in the bookstore, hunting for new books and standing in line.

  1. More interesting

This one specially applies to kids, teenagers and young adults, who are impressed by innovative technical solutions. Moreover, ebooks often contain extras that printed books don’t.

  1. Longer lifespan

Paper is not exactly the strongest material on the planet. It gets wet, teared, crumpled and so on. An ebook on the other hand lives forever, you just need a working electronic gadget to read it. When this gadget is getting older and more unreliable, you can easily place the ebook into another device.

  1. Translating unknown words

If you read a book written in a language different from your mother tongue, you will probably need some help with a word or two at some point. Instead of looking it up in a dictionary, you can simply click on the unknown word and read the translation.

  1. You don’t need any external light to read

Printed books can only be read in daylight or at places where there is proper lighting. At the bus stop, on the bus or train, or in the car this is often not the case. This cannot happen with ebook reader devices, since they all contain internal lighting.

However, it is also a useful reading for parents, since they can learn about Nerf gun safety, how to use a Nerf Blaster, how to set up a battle ground, safety equipment and clothing and how to find bargain-priced Nerf blasters. The author wrote from his children’s and his own experience about several issues, such as reviews about the best Nerf guns from the owner’s point of view, including Nerf N-Strike Mega Centurion or Nerf N-Strike Elite Rapid Strike CS-18; or more than 25 popular Nerf blaster models measured for firing distance and accuracy. There are descriptions about field tests of different blasters (with photos), what blaster the owners liked and what they thought about them compared to other models in their possession.

Top 10 ebooks for kids under 12

Posted in ebooks

Why is reading books beneficial for children?

Well, there are several reasons for that, including neurological, psychological, educational and social reasons. Reading improves the brain, linguistic skills and creativity, and it helps kids succeed at school.

What kind of books do kids like?

Funny, entertaining, engaging books, the ones that are impossible to put down and possibly give them quite a lot to think about. Here is a list of 10 of these books, dedicated for kids under 12.

  1. The Harry Potter books (J. K. Rowling)

The number one on the list is actually not one book, but a fantasy series containing seven books. They make an unbreakable unit, since they tell the same story line in a period of seven years. Anyone who has ever read this saga would agree on the fact that this is the best reading for kids (and probably for adults as well). It reached millions of children, and made many of them addicted to reading in general, which is an accomplishment no books have ever done before to such an extent.

  1. Yellow Star (Jennifer Roy)

A serious topic narrated from a child’s point of view, written in a relatively simple language, which makes it unique in the holocaust genre, and makes it easier for kids to understand this part of history.

  1. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (C. S. Lewis)

The first book of a fantasy series, probably the best-known piece of Chronicles of Narnia from 1940. It’s about four young siblings visiting the world of talking animals and mythical creatures and having amazing adventures together. One of the classics of children’s literature.

  1. The Book Thief (Markus Zusak)

  1. Design choice

If you use Google Slides for creating your ebook, you don’t need any previous design experience, so the program is perfect for beginners. When deciding on the layout, you can choose for example landscape (which gives you room to insert visuals and text) or portrait mode, which will give your book a more conventional form. In order to change from landscape to portrait, you have to select File, Page setup, Custom, and here type 8.5 by 11 inches. From now on every new page in this document has this size you have given here.

  1. Changing the master slide

In order to avoid needing to modify every single slide one by one, you can simply change the master slide of the document. This way you can have the same image on the top of the pages, you can have the possibility to insert text at certain places of the page and inserting videos or pictures at another. In order to modify the master slide, you should click on Slide, then Edit Master, and you can start editing the template as you want. Another option to do this is to select View, then Master, then you can click on the slide that you wish to modify.

  1. Add your content

This is the actual “writing the book” part. If it is more suitable for you, you can do it completely on your own, from the scratch. However, you can also choose another way. With the help of Google, you can also search for content that is free to use (legally). Click on Tools, Research, then type in the search tab: Google Slides. Here find the option Filter Results by Usage Rights, and click “Free to Use, Share or Modify…”, and now you can draw the chosen content to your file. In addition to this, there are several websites that provide open-source textbook creation tools. Here we can mention Open Ed, CK12, Flat World, Open Textbook Library or Openstax College.

  1. Sharing your book

After everything else is done, all you have to do is sharing your book with others. As mentioned before, with the use of Google Slides there is a possibility to export the book in Pdf, which is a convenient solution, since even the most basic users know it. Another option is to publish it as a webpage.
